The new method combines antibody-labeled nanoparticles with high-throughput mass spectrometry to measure small molecules known as peptides from Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the detection of active TB infections, they reported in the U.S. journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The team said their newly developed NanoDisk-MS assay not only outperforms all others currently on the market but also takes just hours to complete. "We are particularly excited about the ability of our high-throughput assay to provide rapid quantitative results that can be used to monitor treatment effects, which will give physicians the ability to better treat worldwide TB infections." Hu said. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), TB remains a major global health problem, with 10 million cases and 2 million deaths per year.
